ABENAKI, located on the Western shores of Mount Desert Island, occupies 26± acres of lush, naturally wooded land with an open meadow and small stream running through it. The winding dirt road meanders through these woods providing privacy and seclusion from all other properties before arriving at the residence, perched on a high point overlooking Pretty Marsh Harbor, with western views of Folly, Bartlett, Hardwood and John’s Islands. The property includes outcroppings of what looks to be shatter-zone granite, beautifully marbled with quartz and basalt, as well as a long, sandy, stretch of beach, totaling perhaps 2,000’ of coveted shorefront. There is also a deeply carved cove to the South of the property, and a private, deep water dock with moorings accessed by a moss covered, pine needle path.
Many of these residences were built with a ‘camp’ motif in the mid 1930’s, and acted as rural retreats for their owners, from their stiff, more formal shingle cottages in Northeast and Seal Harbor, and serve that same purpose to this day. As such a retreat and respite, Abenaki has been enjoyed by one family for its’ three generations. The Great Room of the cottage has a huge, rough granite fireplace and vaulted ceiling, with rafters and skylights to brighten the room, with plenty of space for dining or lounging, and a full-length, partially covered deck outside overlooking the bay. The kitchen is a very basic, camp style room. Throughout the seasonal residence there are open stud and natural wood walls with fir floors; there are three bedrooms, and two additional rooms perhaps originally designed for a nanny or maid, one with its own entrance and sink within the room; there are two full bathrooms. Abenaki has tremendous rustic character, and harkens back to the olden, less complicated, laid back days, with a much sought after, relaxed atmosphere.
There are several outbuildings: The Beaver Cottage, currently used for various storage, ping pong games, and laundry facilities, a pump house with storage room, and a 12’ x 22’ water’s edge Boathouse used for storage but with great potential for many more uses.
ABENAKI is the perfect family compound or Kingdom property, centrally located on Mount Desert Island, nearby to all the island villages and the airport.
